Another trip to Guatemala with KIDS Volunteers!
I have just returned from a great trip to Nebaj, Guatemala, where over the course of a week, our team of 24 volunteers treated over 1200 children. The mountainous area we visited had numerous beautiful Mayan pueblos, whose inhabitants don’t have any access to dental care and they are usually inundated with sweets in the form of candy and sodas. As such, many children have large cavities, painful abscesses, and infections that need treatment. Our group went to a different school every day, and worked with the teachers of the schools to setup a make shift clinic. We have several stations for the children, including oral hygiene instruction, fluoride application, and food/diet guidance. The children are amazing, and are very patient and curious about us. The highlight of the trip is always working with the children, who always manage to smile despite their apprehension of seeing a dentist for the first time.
